What is an intensivist?

An intensivist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating the critically ill. Also known as critical care physicians, intensivists are trained and experienced in dealing with complex issues of critically ill patients, as well as treating or averting complications that often arise quickly in critical care situations. They provide a comprehensive approach to caring for intensive care patients rather than focusing on specific body systems. An intensivist's educational background includes completing a residency in internal medicine, emergency medicine, pulmonary medicine, anesthesia or surgery followed by a fellowship in critical care medicine.
